How CO2 pH Control Works

Step 1 — Dissolve

CO2 gas is dissolved in water to form mild carbonic acid, gradually lowering pH.

Step 2 — Control

pH changes are nearly linear and self-buffering — pH won't drop below 6.0, eliminating risk of over-acidification.

Step 3 — Neutralize

Carbonic acid reacts to form benign carbonate salts that don't cause further problems with the effluent or increase TDS levels.

CO2 vs Mineral Acids

Feature CO2 Mineral Acids (H2SO4/HCl)
Safety Non-corrosive, safe to handle Hazardous, corrosive
pH Control Gradual, self-buffering Sharp, risk of overshoot
TDS Impact No increase Increases TDS
Equipment Standard piping Acid-resistant required
Automation Fully automated Requires constant monitoring
Residue Benign carbonate salts Problematic salts
Storage Standard pressurized tank Acid-proof containment
Environmental Eco-friendly Hazardous waste disposal

Applications

Desalination

Post-treatment remineralization — CO2 + limestone bed restores calcium, bicarbonate alkalinity, and stable pH to desalinated water before municipal distribution. Required as final stage after RO treatment.

Drinking Water Treatment

pH adjustment of treated drinking water. CO2 provides safe, precise control without risk of over-acidification. Self-buffering ensures pH stays within compliance range.

Wastewater & Effluent

pH neutralization of alkaline industrial effluent. Unlike mineral acids, CO2 doesn't increase TDS levels — a critical benefit for treated water quality and environmental compliance.

Industrial Process Water

Cooling towers, pulp & paper mills, mining operations, textile processing, and swimming pools — precise, safe pH control without corrosive chemicals or special equipment.
